There Moscow it is an insect that we all know and we consider it most of the time annoying if not a carrier of dirt. Flies on food, flies on him, flies on our pets are all unwelcome things. Let's try to get to know this insect better, also to keep it away better.

White fly: meaning

When we talk about Moscow we mean in a general sense an insect of the order of Diptera, there are several but in the collective imagination the flies have some morphological and ethological characteristics. From time to time, changing context and even geographical region, we can find different insects always called fliesThis is because today it is not possible to indicate a rigorous definition of the common name on an exclusively taxonomic basis.

When we talk about whiteflies most of the time we don't want to indicate a insect but an attitude, a situation. You are the white fly of the family, of a group, of a crowd if you know how to stand out, usually in a positive way. It is a bit the opposite of the sheep it was, after all, to think about it.

Let's go back to the world of insects instead if we talk about "house fly" (Musca domestica), a cosmopolitan and ubiquitous dipteran, common in all environments frequented by man, open or closed.

Fly - annoying insect

The insect we are talking about is so annoying that many urban legends revolve around its name on how to keep it away. The one that struck me most, and particularly widespread in northern Italy, says that the posting of a sign with large black lettering number 58 would keep flies away. Why on earth 58? Obviously I also wondered when I was told that the flies, seeing the design created by these two figures side by side, think that it is a spider's web. Obviously he stays away.

Flies are medium sized insects, they can go from 5 to 10 millimeters in length, as a rule, not much more. They have a compact body with very distinct parts such as head, thorax and abdomen, then there are also the legs and functional wings. If you have seen a drawing or a photograph of the fly you will have noticed its sucking apparatus clearly visible, it uses it to feed on organic remains using saliva.

When we saw the horseflies we have instead noticed that in the female specimens the apparatus is piercing-sucking. The many varieties of fly have elements in common that we try to list as a sort of identikit. They all have a livery with gray pigmentation or even with shades towards black or brown, a lack of perception of the antennae, the head clearly evident, free, broad and with large eyes. The thorax of the flies is argo and robust, relatively short, the fusiform abdomen is not very evident. To fly it uses a pair of well-developed, transparent wings, arranged horizontally on the sides of the abdomen in a resting position.

Other classic characteristics of this annoying insect, and which in fact are the basis of the annoyance it creates, are its ability to fly and the emission of the hum. Its ability to walk on any surface is admirable, even glass, regardless of orientation.

Moscow: what it eats

Whether it is flies from a few millimeters and flies of almost one centimeter, all are characterized by a juvenile phase in which they take on the appearance of a whitish conical larva. In this phase, therefore, when very young, they feed on vegetables, live meat, parts of dead animals, unless they are parasites of superior animals.

There is in fact the case of some fly larvae which live in the lower intestine of mammals, including humans, and which particularly affect children who swallow their eggs while playing with the earth.
When flies become adults and have lots of wings, they prefer to suck the sugary liquids of the plants, or the blood.

Moscow: how long it lives

There fly lives on average about three weeks so let's start immediately by debunking the widespread myth that a fly would not be able to exceed 24 hours of life. Of course we are not dealing with an animal that lives years and years, but one day it is really an incorrect estimate of its average life. We can find, depending on the environmental contexts and the species considered, life cycles ranging from 15 days to 30 days. So little? That's right, so little, but they remain very popular insects due to their fast and generous reproduction.

Moscow: view

The sight for the fly is very important, as demonstrated by the fact that this insect has two organs of sight: the eyes properly called (compound) and the ocelli. The eyes are made up of a variable number of ommatidia hexagonal in shape and each ommatidium covers a segment of the global field of view. This means that the image perceived by the insect is therefore a mosaic, and its definition will be greater the higher the number of ommatidia is: flies have four thousand, butterflies from 12 to 17,000, dragonflies 28,000 ...
